Our Story
At Olson's Greenhouse, we grow as a family.
Originally named Olson’s Nursery, what began as a hobby has now become a 4th generation family-owned and operated business, dedicated to providing homeowners and landscapers with locally grown, acclimated bedding plants and related living ornamental plants.
From the beginning, Olson’s Greenhouse Gardens has been a family enterprise, founded on principles of hard work and integrity. Our great-grandfather, Roy Olson, began growing tomato plants for area farmers from his backyard in Santaquin, Utah, in the early 1940s.
Starting out, our plants were grown in hotbeds, where decomposing pea vines (to provide heat for root growth) were covered with a special blend of mountain topsoil collected from the surrounding area. These hotbeds were covered by wood & glass frames and canvas was pulled over top on the coldest nights. Early tomato seedlings were sold in lots of 100, wrapped in burlap, and sold for 10¢ per plant!
Olson’s Greenhouse is a wholesale grower and distributor of plants throughout the Intermountain West, with growing locations in Utah, Idaho, and Colorado. With five growing locations and over a million square feet of environmentally-controlled greenhouse space, Olson’s Greenhouse supplies more than 400 retail locations throughout the Intermountain West, from Texas to Montana and Nevada to Iowa.
The nursery stayed the same size for many years, but soon Roy’s thoughts had turned more towards flowers than tomato starts. By the late 1950s, Roy and his son, Jack, expanded the business by converting the top level of old, 2-story chicken coops into greenhouses. Before long, they were providing tomato and bedding plants to garden centers throughout the area.

In 1963, Jack Olson built several greenhouses and concentrated on growing hothouse tomatoes (produce) year-round in addition to the spring flower business. The family continued producing greenhouse tomato crops until 1977, when full focus was placed upon their quickly expanding bedding plant business with several large chain stores.
Jack officially took over the family business in 1970. Along with his wife, Nola Rae, and sons Don, Brad and Bart, he continued expanding the business for the next two decades by adding growing space and extending shipping operations.
In 1987, the business was separated into wholesale and retail divisions, with Brad and his wife, Chris, taking over the Garden Shoppe, while Jack and Bart continued selling wholesale through Olson’s Greenhouse Gardens.
